In this article, I want to talk about why promotional products don't work. Yup, you read that correctly. Sometimes they are nothing but a waste of good marketing money. Obviously, I believe that promotional products do work, but only when properly used. Study after study has shown that promotional products are more effective than TV, radio and paper advertising. As effective as promotional products can be, many companies are spending a lot of money on promotional products and have nothing to show for it. Below, I have outlined three reasons why promotional products don't work:

#1 You’re using the wrong product(s). If you’re not using the correct product(s), then promotional products will not work. In fact, in some cases, you can do more harm than good. You certainly don't want your company's logo to be the last thing your customer sees before throwing away that “stupid pen” that never wrote to begin with. Yeah…. not good! This is like buying a 12-inch TV and then complaining that it isn’t big enough. You choose which products you use, and they need to be good products. Promotional products don't work if you use the wrong products. 

#2 You don’t have a plan. Let’s say that you did pick the right products and they just arrived in the mail. Now what? Instead of using targeted plans and effective marketing strategies, you start to give them out to friends and family, randomly tossing them out left and right. You throw the products out like seed and hope it will take hold. Let me tell you a secret: it won’t. This is like buying a 72-inch TV and randomly plugging in the cords without first researching which cords go where only to blame it on the TV when it doesn’t work correctly. You have to know how you're going to utilize the promotional products. You need a plan. Promotional products don't work if you don't have a plan to effectively use them. 

#3 You have them, but you don’t use them. This is the exact opposite problem of Reason #2. Some hold on to their $.99 notepads like they are treasured gold. Instead of using their products, they are afraid to let them go (or even worse, they just let their products sit in a closet and they never even see the light of day). This is like buying your perfect 72-inch TV and correctly plugging in the right cords in the right places, but refusing to turn it on and then complaining that it doesn’t work. Promotional products don't work if you don't use them.
